The remains of the city of Salamis are on the east coast of Cyprus north of modern Famagusta. In 1100 BC it was the capital of Cyprus. Salamis survived the successive occupations of the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, and Romans but eventually succumbed to the forces of nature. The site extends over an area of one square mile.
